Ambroxide, broadly accepted by the cast name Ambroxan, is a by itself occurring terpenoid and one of the key capacity amenable for the odor of ambergris. It is an autoxidation artefact of ambrein.
Ambroxide is actinic from sclareol, a basic of the capital oil of clary sage. Sclareol is oxidatively base to a lactone, which is hydrogenated to the agnate diol.
Ambroxide is acclimated in perfumery for creating ambergris addendum and as a fixative. Small amounts (< 0.01 ppm) are acclimated as a additive in food.
