Ambroxide, broadly accepted by the cast
name Ambroxan, is a by itself occurring terpenoid and one of the key capacity
amenable for the odor of ambergris. It is an autoxidation artefact of ambrein.
Ambroxide is actinic from sclareol, a basic
of the capital oil of clary sage. Sclareol is oxidatively base to a lactone,
which is hydrogenated to the agnate diol.
Ambroxide is acclimated in perfumery for
creating ambergris addendum and as a fixative. Small amounts (< 0.01 ppm)
are acclimated as a additive in food.
